Firefighter David Murfitt has retired!

There are many unsung heroes in Littleport – and not too many actually ever know about their achievements. David Murfitt for instance who is often seen helping out marshalling regularly at Littleport’s Parkrun. This is a man who has served 25 years with Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue Service at Littleport fire station.

Announcing his retirement only this September, his wife Amanda said: “Today my husband retires from CFRS after exactly 25 years as a retained firefighter for Littleport.

I am so proud of him and all that he has done for the local community over the years.

It’s not easy juggling being on call alongside a full-time job and family life.

Often it is the family life that suffers usually missed events because you can’t get off call and change plans at the last minute.”

There have been highs and lows and according to David; “Nothing beats the feeling when you are able to help someone in distress, but to all those we could not help – sleep peacefully, and those we have, enjoy life and do the things you have always wanted to do.

“The fire station alerter has now gone which will enable me to spend more time with my family, and dog walking. To all the firefighters out there, stay safe and carry on the great work. Finally to the lads of BO4 Littleport you know what a fantastic job you all do. Keep up the good work.

If anyone is thinking of trying to become an on-call firefighter I would say give it a go. It can be very rewarding, and you would be helping your community, family and friends. It has been a privilege to have been part of a team protecting the village I have lived in all my life”, concluded David Murfitt.
